You are getting closer to graduation – time to get ready to embark on the journey to your first job! This is an exciting time for graduates and preparation will be the key to your success. Here are some helpful tips on how to best prepare.
Do your homework! That’s right, homework doesn’t end after college graduation. Researching is critical to your success, not only for conducting a productive job search but also for effectively interviewing. The best place to start is the company website where you will find information about the company, their mission, values and community involvement. Don’t forget to research industry trends, company articles and other related news. This will help you gain a better understanding of the company, and you can prepare questions for your interviewer as well!
Not a lot of work experience? That’s ok - you can talk about your degree program, projects, and internships to provide insight into your knowledge and abilities. Remember to actively listen during your interview to ensure you understand what is being asked, and provide specific examples that highlight your accomplishments or relevant work. Make sure you are succinct in your answers and ask clarifying questions if you are unsure of what is being requested.
Whether you have a virtual or onsite interview, it is important for you to make a good impression. Treat a virtual interview just like you would an onsite interview. Dress professionally, prepare, be on time and be engaged. Always, have a clean and professional background and check your lighting. Internet connections and audio should be checked ahead of time to ensure you do not have any technical issues. Nervousness can happen and is a completely normal reaction to an interview, especially if you are new to the process. Try to relax, be professional, friendly, maintain comfortable eye contact – and of course smile!
